GENERAL STATEMENT:

Under the direction of the Recreation Programmer and Pool Manager, the Swim Team Coach accomplishes specialized work in coaching individuals and groups regarding swim stroke activities, explains and demonstrates proper use of equipment, instructs athletes in proper competitive swimming techniques, observes athletes to detect and correct mistakes, organizes and conducts events for the City of Kyle Kudas Swim Team in addition to: protecting lives, preventing accidents, enforcing safety regulations, providing instruction and performs related work as required. This position is a temporary seasonal summer position.

**The City of Kyle is now offering a hiring incentive for all Pool positions! Employees will receive a $100 sign-on bonus if offered a position by May 13th, and an additional $150 bonus for working thru the end of the season (08/26/23).*

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Display professionalism with patrons, remain current on required skills and certifications, and follow/enforce all rules and regulations provided by the City of Kyle.
  • Attend all required meetings, trainings, and in-services brought forth by the Recreation Programmer and/or Pool Manager.
  • Coach members of the City of Kyle Swim Team on proper swimming form and techniques for all strokes.
  • Observe team members, to detect and correct mistakes, as well as provide feedback on performance; demonstrate properly the required skills to team members as needed.
  • Organize and coordinate swimming events, and all scheduled practices. Must provide a weekly practice itinerary and breakdown.
  • Organizes and puts away needed swim practice equipment; assist in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment.
  • Conducts meetings with participants and parents as needed; aware of any medical conditions stated by members of the team.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures and assist fellow employees in times of emergencies.
  • Serves as lifeguard and monitors the safety of aquatic facility patrons as needed.
  • Responds to public inquiries about aquatic programs and special events, while not instructing/on patrol.
  • Performs all other duties as duly assigned.
  • Maintains desired working relationship with Parks & Recreation Director, Recreation Manager, Recreation Programmer-Aquatics, and City Manager. Performs all other duties as duly assigned by the Parks & Recreation Director.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of American Red Cross Standard First Aid training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Water Safety Instructor, and Lifeguard Training are all required.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
  • Ability Swim with proficiency and endurance for lessons and rescues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, and the public.
  • Skill in monitoring/assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Possess good decision-making skills and the ability to respond quickly in stressful situations.
  • Ability to remain calm and act resourcefully in an emergency and in stressful situations.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRMENTS:

  • Age 18 or older and a minimum of six (6) months professional experience in instructing or coaching swim teams.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas Driver's License.
  • American Red Cross Standard First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Training, and Water Safety Instructor Certifications are all required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee may be routinely required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Work may routinely require the employee to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This job requires the individual to frequently work outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions, including higher temperatures, humidity, moisture, and distracting noises.

An individual who poses a direct threat to the health and safety of himself/herself or others in the workplace will be deemed not qualified for this position.
