GENERAL STATEMENT:

Under the direction of the Recreation Programmer-Aquatics, assist with administrative, supervisory, and professional work in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the City pool and in coordinating various aquatics programs. Accomplishes specialized work in protecting life, preventing accidents, enforcing safety regulations, and providing instructions; performs related work as required. This position is a temporary seasonal summer position.

**The City of Kyle is now offering a hiring incentive for all Pool positions! Employees will receive a $100 sign-on bonus if offered a position by May 13th, and an additional $150 bonus for working thru the end of the season (08/26/23).*

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assume full management responsibilities of City Pool facilities in absence of Recreation Programmer-Aquatics.
  • Responsible for the safety of guests and the enforcement of safety rules and regulations at aquatic facilities.
  • Display professionalism with pool patrons and staff. Assists patrons with entrance into the facility, collects fees and checks passes. Assists customers with questions about the facility and its programming, provides information on facility hours, features, and rules over the phone and in person.
  • Assist the Recreation Programmer in; planning and/or leading staff training or in-services as required, setting daily cleaning duties for staff, assigning lifeguard rotation(s), and verifying proper currency protocols are followed and correct.
  • Assist the Recreation Programmer-Aquatics in the maintenance of the swimming pool; monitor and maintain pool filtration system; monitor pool water chemistry through testing of water samples; adjust chemistry as needed to maintain standards.
  • Supervises and assists cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment throughout the day to ensure optimal cleanliness. This includes but is not limited to; brushing, vacuuming, netting and cleaning of pool, minor repairs, installations or removal of features, equipment, and signage. Supervises and assists in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment.
  • Assist the Recreation Programmer-Aquatics in scheduling, training, and supervising lifeguards, swimming instructors, cashiers, and other related personnel.
  • Supervises and co-coordinates aquatics programs for City Pool facilities such as: Learn to Swim, lifeguard classes, special events, and private pool reservations with the Recreation Programmer-Aquatics, Recreation Manager, and Parks & Recreation Director.
  • Teaches swim lessons for the City's Learn To Swim program. Will use curriculum provided to lead classes of 1-4 learners in a safe, fun, and engaging environment, demonstrate swim skills to learners, document progress for each learner's skills as they develop and progress, correctly place swimmers in appropriate skills level based off personal observations and instructor recommendations, and communicate with parents/guardians of learners to provide feedback at regularly scheduled checkpoints.
  • Coordinates schedules and maintains related records and statistics for programs and personnel at the swimming pool; prepares attendance and accident reports.
  • Direct the patrolling of the pool and the enforcement of safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phones, typing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities, conducting classes, collecting fees; schedule for rental and use of pool, helping set up for classes, events, etc.
  • Maintains desired working relationship with Parks & Recreation Director, Recreation Manager, Recreation Programmer-Aquatics, and City Manager. Performs all other duties as duly assigned by the Parks and Recreation Director.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of basic opening, closing, and cash on hand statements.
  • Knowledge of American Red Cross Standard First Aid training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding, and WSI curriculum.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, and the public.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service and personnel services.
  • Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance for possible rescues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of basic opening, closing, and cash on hand statements
  • Skill in monitoring/assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Possess good decision making skills and the ability to respond quickly in stressful situations.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Age 18 or older and a minimum of two (2) seasons as a lifeguard.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED For the Professional Rescuer required. Proof of an equivalent and current up-to-date lifeguard certification may substitute.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety, American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor preferred.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas Driver's License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS:

While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee may be routinely required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Work may routinely require the employee to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This job requires the individual to frequently work outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions, including higher temperatures, humidity, moisture, and distracting noises.

An individual who poses a direct threat to the health and safety of himself/herself or others in the workplace will be deemed not qualified for this position.
